The frequency of periodontal maintenance cleanings is determined by the patient’s unique susceptibility to the disease. Usually, these teeth cleaning sessions are scheduled every 3- 6 months, and alternate between a general dentist and periodontist. The reason for frequent cleanings is because the bacteria associated with periodontal conditions can activate the disease as early as every 2 months. Therefore, before the detrimental bacteria invade, they should be removed from the teeth especially below the gumline where bacteria likes to habit. Compliance with the suggested maintenance regimen is essential for your long-term periodontal health.

Periodontal Maintenance (Cleanings)
Insufficient and infrequent periodontal maintenance can sabotage the initial results achieved with periodontal therapy. Patients generally are not able to cleanse pockets that are 5 mm or greater. Some studies have shown that toothbrushes reach ~1mm below the gumline. Patients simply do not have the ability to cleanse pockets as we can, even with thorough instruction. In very little time — depending on the strength of the host’s immunity — the pathogens can multiply to the point of overwhelming the host response, and the disease becomes active again. The World Workshop in Clinical Periodontics states, “Maintenance visits on a regular basis seem to be more important in retention of teeth than either the type of active treatment accomplished for oral hygiene practices,” and “… supportive maintenance care remains the most dependable measure for disease control in the treated periodontal patient.”
Dr. Shelby believes, “As a periodontist, not only do we care about your general oral health, but we pay special attention to prevent periodontal disease recurrence, therefore maintenance appointments are essential.” During these appointments, bacterial plaque will be removed above and below the gumline by our hygienist and the health of your gums and bone levels are evaluated by your doctor. The periodontist and hygienist work together to make sure things are maintaining stable and if recurrence is noticed, radiographs may be taken, and early intervention can be done to prevent further surgical treatment. Radiographs are used to monitor the extent of bone disease and the presence of infection. These images can also help locate areas that may be progressing.
At Lawrence Periodontics we want patients to feel comfortable about their treatment and confident that they are doing the right thing for their oral and overall health. For a periodontal maintenance appointment call or email to schedule.
