Dr. Andrew Shelby, DMD, MS was born and raised in the small town of Clinton, MO near Truman Lake, where his parents were actively involved in the community and promoted both himself, and his older sister (nurse in Kansas City), to enter the healthcare field based on the altruistic values seen at an early age. Dr. Shelby is proud to be the first dentist and periodontist in the history of his family.
Dr. Shelby started his journey to becoming a Periodontist at the University of Colorado and graduated with a BS in biology. While being a full-time student, he also worked at a 5-star, 5-diamond restaurant where he participated in delivering the highest standard of industry service as a sommelier. Following graduation, he received his dental training at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health (ASDOH) in Mesa, AZ where he graduated in 2014.
While Dr. Shelby’s educational pursuits and experiences have taken him all over the United States, he has always kept in touch with his small town roots, and returned to the University of Iowa in Iowa City to complete his periodontal residential program and earn his Master’s Degree in Oral Science researching the effects of biomarkers on the overall health of the periodontium. Dr. Shelby enjoys the challenge of periodontics and places his primary focus on meeting the individual needs of each patient. He is proud to offer his patients both surgical and non-surgical periodontal treatment, periodontal cosmetic surgery, soft tissue grafting, dental implants and sinus augmentation. He strives to understand each patient’s desires, circumstances and needs in order to offer the most effective and innovative treatment available. Dr. Shelby maintains a traditional approach to periodontal treatment, but also integrates the latest futuristic options of digital and technological dental advances to offer his patients the most cutting-edge treatment on the market to ensure that the gold-standard of treatment are met.
In addition to maintaining his full-time private practice, Dr. Shelby is committed to educating tomorrow’s dentists and specialists. He is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the Academy of Osseointegration, the American Dental Association, the Midwest Society of Periodontology, and the Straumann ITI Study Club.
Although Dr. Shelby is a native Missourian, he has been a diehard Jayhawks fan his entire life and has always had the dream of calling Lawrence home. This interest started when he was 5 years-old and attended Roy Williams basketball camp up to the age of 12. Dr. Shelby has always been involved with numerous community organizations including the Boys Scouts of America where he earned his Eagle Scout rank in 2002, and dedicated many summers in contributing to the development of young men at Mic-ko-sa camp in Iconium, MO. In his free time, Dr. Shelby is an avid outdoorsman having both the Ozark countryside and Truman Lake in his background growing up. His life experiences have taken him all over the United States and have sparked lifelong interest in recreational activities such as snowboarding, mountain climbing, wakeboarding, surfing, cycling, running, golfing, cooking, watching formula 1, etc.
Although Dr. Shelby has an appetite for recreation and adventure, he finds his true pleasure in continually learning (better term) through experiencing new cultures, meeting and interacting with new people, and caring for individuals in his community. Ultimately his goal is to establish lifelong relationships with both his patients and colleagues, and provide a level of care equivalent to working on his own family members.
