As a periodontist with over 3 years of specialized training, I can provide you with unparalleled treatment to achieve enduring dental health.”

Patient Experiences

Periodontal Therapy

Periodontal (gum) disease is an infection of the tissues that hold your teeth in place. The periodontium consists of three tissues: gingiva, alveolar bone and periodontal ligaments. It is typically caused by poor brushing and flossing habits that allow plaque – a sticky film of bacteria – to build up on the teeth and harden. In advanced stages, periodontal disease can lead to sore, bleeding gums, and possibly pain upon chewing or even tooth loss.

At your initial exam, we will examine your gums and x-rays for any signs of inflammation to determine the most appropriate method of treatment. We incorporate the latest technology and techniques in Kansas to provide you with the treatment necessary to control your infection, and halt your disease. This may include either surgical or non-surgical approaches with the ultimate goal of saving your teeth!

Dental Implants

The gold standard for tooth/teeth replacement in modern dentistry is with the use of dental implants. Dental implants come in many different types uniquely suited to meet your individualized needs. Our specialized dental implant training allows us to digitally plan and place your dental implants with the use of 3D imaging to ensure precise placement to mimic your natural teeth. Dental implants are produced using biocompatible materials that fuse with the surrounding bone, and provide support for the placement of an artificial tooth that will increase chewing capacity, while also increasing smile esthetics.

Many options exist when placing dental implants and Dr. Shelby is a certified Implantologist with over 400 hours of advanced training in in the placement of dental implants. Visit us today for a comprehensive evaluation to determine if you are a good candidate for dental implants.

Gingival Recession

Are your teeth constantly aching when eating hot or cold foods, if yes, then you may be developing gingival (gum) recession. In addition to the sensitivity felt in your roots when enjoying such foods, your gum and tooth may appear unsightly. Also, when recession of the gum tissue occurs, the body loses its natural defense against bacterial penetration and trauma and reconstruction using grafting techniques is an option. If there is minimal recession, then there is still some healthy gingiva to protect the tooth and no treatment other than modifying home care practices is necessary. When recession reaches the mucosa, the first line of defense against bacterial penetration is lost. When the recession is severe, the root surfaces are exposed and can lead to root caries. A gingival graft is designed to resolve this issue.

If this is the case, gum or skin grafting is a plausible option that you should consider. Gum grafting will strengthen the tissue surrounding the tooth, anchoring the tooth in and preventing further gum recession.

Cosmetic Periodontal Treatment

Cosmetic periodontal plastic surgical procedures help to create a beautiful framework for your teeth. The gum tissue which surrounds your natural teeth and restorations needs to be healthy and in the correct position and dimension to achieve a natural and esthetic smile. Your restorative dentist can then help you improve your smile by designing and enhancing your smile with perfect crowns or veneers if required. (copied, slightly modified)

Although your teeth may appear short, they may actually be the proper length. The teeth may be covered with too much gum tissue, or your underlying bone may be too close to the margin where your crown meets the root. This occurrence is simply known as Altered Passive Eruption. Dr. Shelby can correct this by performing esthetic crown lengthening. During this procedure, excess gum and bone tissue are reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth. This can be done to more than one tooth to even your gum line and to create a beautiful smile. (copied, slightly modified)

Regeneration

Regeneration is the reproduction or reconstruction of the lost or injured periodontal tissues in such a way that the architecture and function of the lost or injured tissues are completely restored. Procedures that regenerate lost bone and tissue supporting your teeth can reverse some of the damage caused by periodontal disease. Your periodontist may recommend a regenerative procedure when the bone supporting your teeth has been destroyed due to periodontal disease.

Sedation / Stress Reduction

Patients who are referred to our office can be a little nervous. This is completely normal, however, some patients are extremely anxious with respect to periodontal treatment.

Patients report many reasons for their anxiety:

  • “I’ve had a bad experience in the past”
  • “I’m worried that I have left things too long”
  • “My teeth are very sensitive, and I am worried I will experience discomfort at some point during my appointment”
  • “I am needle phobic” (a fear of needles)
  • “I am a gagger”
  • “l have difficulty keeping my mouth open for extended periods of time”
  • ” I am afraid of the unknown”

Unfortunately, like heart disease, periodontal disease is silent and does not resolve on its own. Thus, periodontal disease must be treated and there are many ways to offer this treatment comfortably.

Many patients with dental anxiety wish to be sedated and choose intravenous sedation to totally relax them during their dental visit. Intravenous sedation is a technique that helps to significantly relax the patient and makes it feel like the dental appointment goes extremely quickly. It is recommended for anxious patients who prefer not to remember the procedure.

Periodontal Maintenance (Cleanings)

The frequency of periodontal maintenance cleanings is determined by the patient’s unique susceptibility to the disease. Usually, these teeth cleaning sessions are scheduled every 3- 6 months, and alternate between a general dentist and periodontist. The reason for frequent cleanings is because the bacteria associated with periodontal conditions can activate the disease as early as every 2 months. Therefore, before the detrimental bacteria invade, they should be removed from the teeth especially below the gumline where bacteria likes to habit.  Compliance with the suggested maintenance regimen is essential for your long-term periodontal health.
